Neither channel wins outright. iMessage is free per message, richer and unfilterable — but only reaches Apple devices. SMS reaches every phone on earth — but costs per segment, needs carrier registration, and can be silently filtered. The right answer is usually both, decided per contact.

Where SMS genuinely wins
Universal reach. Every phone takes SMS. No channel matches that, and for anything critical — a delivery code, an appointment change, a service outage — reaching everyone matters more than reaching some people beautifully.
Throughput. SMS scales to enormous volume quickly. iMessage sending runs through real Apple accounts with real daily limits, so a one-hour blast to 200,000 people is an SMS job, not an iMessage one.
Predictable per-unit pricing. You know what a segment costs. No capacity planning.
Where iMessage genuinely wins
Nothing is filtered away. This is the big one. US carriers filter a meaningful share of A2P SMS traffic with no notice and no error — the message reports as sent and simply never arrives. iMessage does not travel over the carrier network, so that failure mode does not exist.
No per-message cost. A 400-character message is one iMessage and three billed SMS segments. Add an image and SMS becomes MMS at several times the price. At volume the gap compounds.
It looks like a person. Rich formatting, real link previews, full-resolution images, typing indicators. It reads like a conversation rather than a broadcast, which is most of why reply rates differ.
No A2P 10DLC. No campaign registration, no brand vetting, no waiting weeks for approval before you can send.
The cost question, honestly
iMessage has no per-message fee, but it is not free — it requires dedicated sending capacity, and that capacity has daily limits because Apple accounts are not designed for unlimited bulk sending. So the comparison is not "free vs paid". It is a fixed monthly cost with a volume ceiling versus a per-message cost with effectively no ceiling.
The crossover depends on two things: how many of your contacts are on iMessage, and how long your messages are. A majority-iPhone list sending long, media-rich messages favours iMessage heavily. A mostly-Android list sending short one-liners favours SMS.
Which means the first thing to establish is not the channel. It is the split.
The answer: route per contact
Choosing one channel for the entire list is the expensive mistake in both directions. Send everything by SMS and you pay carrier fees for every iPhone user who would have received a free, richer iMessage. Send everything by iMessage and every Android contact silently gets nothing.
The workable approach is three steps:
- Check the list first. Run it through an iMessage checker to split iMessage-capable numbers from SMS-only ones.
- Write for each channel. The iMessage version can be long and carry an image and a link preview. The SMS version should be short enough to stay in one segment.
- Make it sticky. Once a contact replies on a channel, keep them there. Moving someone between blue and green mid-conversation fragments the thread on their phone.
On US consumer lists, somewhere around half of numbers typically come back as iMessage-capable, though it varies a lot by audience and country — European lists often run far lower. That is another reason to measure your own list rather than trust a benchmark.
Compliance applies to both
Skipping A2P 10DLC does not mean skipping consent. TCPA and equivalent laws govern the message and the relationship, not the transport. You still need permission to message someone, you still must honour STOP immediately and permanently, and you still must identify yourself. iMessage removes a carrier registration step, not a legal obligation.
